Why look past a tin roof in Bangladesh?

Tin, the corrugated iron sheet people call dheu tin or CI sheet, is the usual roof on village houses, town extensions and shops, because it goes up fast and every bazaar sells it. Its problems are just as familiar. In April and May, before the rains, the room under a bare tin roof is very hot by midday. In the monsoon, rain on tin is loud enough to stop a conversation. And tin rusts, first at the nail holes and the laps and faster near the coast in Cox's Bazar, Khulna or Barishal, until the roof is patched with tar and plastic.

An ASA/PVC tile sheet deals with the heat, the noise and the rust, and it adds something tin never had: a roof that looks tiled. It is not the answer for every tin roof. For a temporary shed or a store room where nobody sleeps, tin may still be enough.

Tin vs ASA/PVC tile sheet: what changes under the roof?

The sheet is four co-extruded layers with no glue: ASA on top, virgin PVC, a PVC core and a milky-white PVC base, all from virgin material, not recycled. Bending strength is above 1,000 N, and real roofs last 25 – 30 years. The factory works under ISO 9001:2015 certificate ICI-23087.D, the sheet has Quatest test results, and every lot ships with a quality certificate (CQ).

Why do guesthouses in Cox's Bazar and Sylhet choose a tile look?

Guests book a resort from photos. A row of cottages under red or orange tile roofs in a tea-garden setting near Sreemangal, or a beach guesthouse in Cox's Bazar under chocolate or dark grey tiles, looks finished in a way a tin roof does not. Rain noise about 80% lower than metal also means fewer guests woken by a monsoon storm at night.

Standard colours are dark grey, red, blue, orange and chocolate; green, white and purple are made to order. Ridge caps, hip ridges, ridge terminals, three-way and four-way pieces, eave sealing tiles and wall flashing come in the same colours, so a resort can put red on the cottages and dark grey on the restaurant and still order one mixed container.

How should the roof be fixed in cyclone and storm areas?

The coastal belt faces Bay of Bengal cyclones, and much of the country gets kalbaishakhi storms in spring. A tile sheet is light, so how it stands up to wind depends on how well it is fixed and on the frame under it. In exposed places, use the tight end of Santiago's installation ranges:

• Purlins 440 mm apart, one under every second tile step (Santiago's range is 440 or 660 mm, always less than 700 mm)
• 5 screw sets per m², the top of the 4 – 5 range
• 70 mm screws through the top of the wave over a purlin, in pre-drilled 6 mm holes, each with an ASA cap; never in the valley
• Top purlin 15 – 18 cm below the ridge, and a slope between 20% and 45%
• Each sheet lapping the next by one wave

The sheet holds only as well as the purlin it is screwed into. Ask your builder or an engineer how the purlins are fixed to the rafters and how the roof frame is tied down to the walls; that part is outside what Santiago supplies. Here is the count for a guest-room block in Cox's Bazar: one gable roof over a row of rooms, ridge 15.3 m including a small overhang at each gable, each face 3.7 m from ridge to eave edge.
