A PVC roof suits Venezuela's heat and rain. A Santiago ASA/PVC roof tile sheet keeps the space below about 6 – 8 °C cooler than a bare metal (zinc) sheet and cuts rain noise by about 80%, according to Santiago tests, and it has no metal to rust near the sea. The price is quoted per order in writing; Venezuela has no trade-agreement preference with Vietnam, so check the duty rate with your customs broker.

Why is a metal roof hard to live under in Venezuela?

A bare metal roof is hard to live under in Venezuela because it heats up in the sun, drums in the rain and rusts near the sea. Much of the country is hot all year, and in most regions the rainy season runs roughly from May to November, with heavy afternoon storms. Many houses, extensions and terraces are roofed with láminas de zinc, galvanised steel sheet that is easy to find and quick to fix. Under that sheet the room heats up by midday, a storm makes conversation difficult, and on the coast the screws and the laps start to rust first.

A Santiago ASA/PVC roof tile sheet deals with those three problems through the material itself, and it gives the house the look of a clay tile roof. It is a roofing sheet 2.5 or 3.0 mm thick, made of four co-extruded layers with no glue: an ASA top layer, virgin PVC, a PVC core and a milky-white PVC base.

Does a PVC roof keep out the heat? (¿El techo de PVC aísla el calor?)

A PVC roof keeps the space below cooler than a metal one, because PVC conducts heat far less than steel. In Santiago tests the space under ASA/PVC sheet stays about 6 – 8 °C cooler than under bare metal sheet. That comparison is with a bare metal sheet, the most common roof in hot districts, not with an insulated roof or a concrete slab.

The underside of a standard sheet is milky white, which keeps a room with no ceiling bright. A dark underside is made to order for owners who prefer it. In a house with a ceiling (cielo raso), the sheet and the ceiling work together, and the room gains from both.

How loud is rain on a PVC roof?

Rain on a Santiago ASA/PVC roof is about 80% quieter than on metal, again from Santiago tests. A 2.5 mm plastic sheet does not ring like thin steel when the drops hit it. For a bedroom or a classroom under the roof, the difference shows on the first stormy afternoon.

Will the sheet last near the sea and in strong sun?

The sheet is built for exterior use on the coast and inland. These are the figures Santiago gives for each concern:

ConcernWhat the sheet hasFigure
Salt air on the coastNo metal in the sheetDoes not rust
Strong sunASA top layer that blocks UVNo colour change after 2,000 hours of artificial UV; colour rated 30 years
Daily heatPVC, a poor heat conductorAbout 6 – 8 °C cooler than bare metal sheet
Rain noise2.5 – 3.0 mm thick sheetAbout 80% quieter than metal
StrengthCo-extruded four-layer sheetBending strength above 1,000 N
Service lifeVirgin material, not recycled25 – 30 years in real use
Warranty2.5 mm and thicker10 years when installed as Santiago recommends

Screws are capped with ASA caps in the colour of the roof, so the fixings are covered too. Each lot comes with a quality certificate (CQ), and the sheet has Quatest test results behind it; Santiago's quality system holds ISO 9001:2015 certificate ICI-23087.D.

Where does a PVC roof fit on a Venezuelan house? (techo de PVC exterior)

The tile sheet fits any pitched roof of a house, plus the outdoor roofs Venezuelan families build around it. These are the usual places:

  • The main roof of a house with a timber or steel frame, in the Spanish-style tile sheet with a matching ridge cap
  • A caney, a covered terrace or a carport: a techo de PVC exterior that stays cooler and quieter than zinc
  • A galpón or storeroom, in 5-wave or 6-wave corrugated sheet, with skylight sheets on 5 – 10% of the roof that let through 80 – 90% of light
  • Not directly on a flat platabanda: the sheets need a slope of 20 – 45%, so a light frame has to be built on the slab first

What does it cost, and how is it imported into Venezuela?

The price of a PVC roofing sheet in Venezuela is quoted per order in writing, because it depends on the profile, colour, thickness, sheet lengths, accessories, quantity and port. Venezuela has no free-trade preference with Vietnam, so check the duty rate with your customs broker before ordering; the goods ship under HS code 3925.90.00.

The minimum order is one 40 ft container, about 5,000 m of sheet, with colours, profiles and accessories mixed in it. Production takes about 5 days. A builder or a group of stores can order through one importer and ship to La Guaira or Puerto Cabello. Samples are free; the buyer pays the courier.

What should installers change for heavy tropical rain?

Installers who are used to zinc sheet need to change three things. Purlins go less than 700 mm apart: 440 or 660 mm for the tile sheet, with one purlin under the foot of each tile step. Screws go through the top of the wave, directly over a purlin, in pre-drilled 6 mm holes, using 70 mm screws with ASA caps at 4 – 5 sets per m². Nothing is screwed in the valley, where storm water runs. Each sheet laps the next by one wave, and the top purlin sits 15 – 18 cm below the ridge for the ridge cap. Santiago sends installation videos with the order; it does not install.

How do PVC roofing tiles cope with strong sun and heavy rain?

The short opens with red ASA/PVC tile sheets being carried up to a house, then a flame is put to a stack of tile sheets made from virgin PVC with an ASA top layer. It ends on a blue warehouse roof under installation and grey tile sheets on a roller line at the factory, with the WhatsApp number +84 935 391 495 on screen.

How do uPVC tile sheets react to heat?

A flame is put to a stack of grey and red tile sheets, Mr Quyen crouches on grey sheets in the factory, and the short ends on a blue warehouse roof where installers lay new sheets. A flame test is a demonstration, not a fire rating.

What does a grey tile roof look like during installation?

Installers screw grey Santiago tile sheets down on a roof while Mr Quyen and a colleague walk along the finished section near the gutter. The short opens in the factory with a green sheet.

Why is a bare metal roof so hot in strong sun?

Mr Quyen holds a white tile sheet in the Santiago factory and explains in English, with captions, why bare metal roofs are hot, noisy in rain and costly to repair. The short then shows a red tile roof on a house and a finished grey tile roof beside the gutter.

Frequently asked questions

Does a PVC roof insulate against heat?

It keeps the space below about 6 – 8 °C cooler than a bare metal sheet, according to Santiago tests, because PVC conducts heat far less than steel. It is not a replacement for ceiling insulation.

How much does a PVC roofing sheet cost in Venezuela?

Santiago quotes per order in writing. Add freight and Venezuelan duty; Venezuela has no trade-agreement preference with Vietnam, so your customs broker gives the rate.

Can PVC roofing sheet be used outdoors?

Yes. The ASA top layer showed no colour change after 2,000 hours of artificial UV, the colour is rated 30 years and the sheet has no metal to rust.

Is a PVC roof noisy in the rain?

Rain noise is about 80% lower than on a metal roof, according to Santiago tests.

Can I lay PVC tile sheets on a flat concrete roof?

Not directly. The sheets need a slope of 20 – 45%, so build a light frame with purlins less than 700 mm apart on the slab first.
