The roof is the main source of heat in a Lao house from March to May. Changing a bare metal roof to ASA/PVC sheets lowers the temperature under the roof by about 6 – 8 °C; a light colour, a ventilated gap under the roof and a ceiling with insulation reduce it further.
Four ways to cut roof heat
- Material: PVC conducts far less heat than steel; ASA/PVC is about 6 – 8 °C cooler underneath than bare metal.
- Colour: lighter colours absorb less sun than dark ones.
- Ventilation: openings at the eaves and ridge let hot air escape.
- Ceiling: insulation above the ceiling stops what heat still gets through.
House with a grey ASA/PVC roof
Which colour stays coolest?
Light grey and blue reflect more sunlight than chocolate or dark grey. If the house design needs a dark roof, put more effort into ventilation and ceiling insulation.
Does a cooler roof also mean a quieter roof?
Yes. A 2.5 – 3.0 mm ASA/PVC sheet is heavier than thin metal and does not drum in rain; rain noise is about 80% lower.

Frequently asked questions
How much cooler is a PVC roof than a metal roof?
About 6 – 8 °C under the roof, compared with common bare metal sheets.
Which roof colour is coolest?
Light colours such as light grey or blue.
Do I still need ceiling insulation?
It helps. The roof sheet reduces heat; insulation stops what still comes through.
