For a patio cover or pergola, opaque ASA PVC sheets give real shade, keep the space about 6 – 8 °C cooler than bare metal and stay quiet in rain. Translucent sheets keep it bright but warmer. A mix works well: ASA PVC over the seating area and a translucent strip near the house to keep rooms behind it bright.
Opaque, translucent or both?
| Goal | Choice |
|---|---|
| Shade and cool seating | ASA PVC |
| Light into the house behind | Translucent strip along the wall |
| Quiet in rain | ASA PVC, about 80% quieter than metal |
| Color match with house | Red, orange, chocolate, blue or dark grey |

Slope and drainage
Give the roof a fall away from the house so water reaches the gutter. Deeper ribs carry more water: the 6-wave sheet has 1.34 in (34 mm) ribs, the 11-wave 0.79 in (20 mm). Avoid very flat slopes with low ribs.
Where the patio meets the wall
Seal the top edge with flashing against the wall and a suitable exterior sealant. For tile-look roofs, Santiago makes a vertical wall flashing shaped to the tile.
