Use opaque ASA PVC sheets where you want shade, a cooler space and a quiet roof, and translucent sheets, polycarbonate or fiberglass composite, where you want daylight. Santiago's translucent glass-fiber composite skylight sheets pass up to 80 – 90% of daylight when clear. Barns and shops often combine both, with 5 – 10% of the roof translucent.
Which job does each sheet do?
| Sheet | Light | Heat below | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASA PVC | Opaque | Cooler | Main roof, patios wanting shade |
| Polycarbonate | Clear to tinted | Warmer | Patios wanting light, greenhouses |
| Fiberglass composite | Clear, white, blue | Warmer | Skylight strips in barns and shops |

How much translucent roof?
For barns and workshops, about 5 – 10% of the roof area spread evenly, roughly one translucent sheet in every 10 – 20. More than that lets in more heat than useful light.
Do the profiles match?
The translucent sheet must nest with its neighbors. Santiago's 11-wave skylight sheet has 0.79 in (20 mm) ribs and the 6-wave has 1.1 in (28 mm) ribs. Send the profile of your roof sheets for a check.
