A Santiago ASA/PVC tile sheet can roof a Brazilian varanda, área gourmet or garage with the look of a colonial tile roof, on a steel or treated-wood frame with purlins less than 700 mm apart and a slope of at least 20%. A 4 m × 5 m área gourmet built against the house takes 6 sheets of 4.161 m, about 24 m² of roof and 96 – 120 screw sets. Keep the churrasqueira's heat and smoke away from the sheet: it is a plastic sheet, not a fire-rated material.

Which roof layout suits a veranda, gourmet area or garage?

Most of these roofs take one of two shapes. A 1-água roof (single slope, also called meia-água) leans against the house wall and sheds water away from it. It is the usual choice for a front varanda, a garage along the side of the house or an área gourmet built onto the back. A 2-águas roof has a ridge in the middle and two faces, which suits a freestanding área gourmet in the garden, a carport away from the house, or a veranda that runs out from a gable end.

Whichever shape you pick, the slope stays between 20% and 45%, a rise of 20 – 45 cm for every metre of horizontal run. Plenty of veranda roofs in Brazil are built flatter than that to keep the eave high. With a tile sheet that does not work, because wind drives rain back up under the laps. If headroom at the eave is tight, raise the support on the house side instead of flattening the roof.

The profile is Spanish-style: rows of curved tiles with a new row every 219 mm, on a sheet 1.05 m wide that covers 0.96 m after the side lap. From the street it reads as a telha colonial roof, although it is one long sheet, not capa-e-canal clay tiles laid piece by piece. When the new roof sits beside an old clay roof, hold a sample against it before choosing the colour. Dark grey, red, blue, orange and chocolate are standard; green, white and purple are made to order.

What frame does a PVC tile roof need over a veranda or garage?

Steel (metalon tube or light steel sections) and treated wood (eucalipto tratado) both work. The sheet cares about purlin spacing more than about the material: purlins less than 700 mm apart, 440 or 660 mm for the tile sheet, so that one purlin sits under the foot of a tile step. On a 2-águas roof the top purlin goes 15 – 18 cm below the ridge, so the ridge cap has something to screw into.

Pre-drill 6 mm holes and drive 70 mm screws through the top of the wave into a purlin, 4 – 5 sets per m², each with an ASA cap. Never screw in the valley, where the water runs. Lap each sheet over the next by one wave. A 1-água roof meets the house with vertical wall flashing, and the low edge takes the eave sealing tile. Ridge cap, hip ridge, ridge terminals and the other accessories come in the same colours as the sheet.

A pergola needs one extra step. The beams of a timber pergolado are spaced for shade, not for a roof sheet, so lay purlins across them at 440 or 660 mm before the tile sheet goes on. A flat pergola top also has to be tilted to at least 20%.

Is a PVC roof safe over a churrasqueira?

Only if the heat is taken somewhere else. A Santiago tile sheet is made of ASA and PVC. It is not a fire-rated material, and Santiago gives no fire rating for it. Under an área gourmet roof the grill should be a built churrasqueira with a hood and a chimney that carries smoke and heat up past the roof line. The sheet must not sit in the path of the hot flue gas or near the flame.

Ask the mason who builds the churrasqueira to frame the chimney opening in masonry or another non-combustible material and to keep the tile sheet well clear of the flue. The safe distance depends on the grill, the chimney and your local building rules, so take it from the mason or the grill maker; we do not give a number. A loose charcoal grill or a gas burner set up under a low plastic roof is a bad idea with any brand of sheet.

Away from the grill, the sheet makes the space more comfortable. In Santiago's tests the area under the tile sheet stays 6 – 8 °C cooler than under bare metal sheet, and rain noise is about 80% lower. You notice the second figure at a Sunday lunch when a summer storm comes through.

How much material does a 4 m × 5 m área gourmet need? A worked example

Take an área gourmet 5 m wide and 4 m deep. Version A leans against the back wall of the house as a 1-água roof with a 25% slope. Version B stands on its own in the garden as a 2-águas roof, with the ridge along the 5 m side and a 30% slope. Sheet lengths are rounded up to whole 219 mm tile steps.

StepA: 1 água against the houseB: 2 águas, freestanding
Length to cover on the slope4.0 m run, 1.0 m rise: 4.12 m2.0 m run, 0.6 m rise: 2.09 m per face
Sheet length19 steps × 219 mm = 4.161 m10 steps × 219 mm = 2.19 m
Sheets across 5 m5 ÷ 0.96 = 5.2, round up: 6 sheets covering 5.76 m6 per face, 12 in total
Running metres on the order6 × 4.161 m = about 25 m12 × 2.19 m = about 26.3 m
Roof area5.76 × 4.161 = about 24 m²5.76 × 2.19 × 2 = about 25.2 m²
Screw sets with ASA caps (4 – 5 per m²)96 – 120about 100 – 126
Purlin rows (no more than 660 mm apart)8 rows, about 5.8 m each5 rows per face, top row 15 – 18 cm below the ridge
Edge pieces5.76 m of vertical wall flashing, 5.76 m of eave sealing tile5.76 m of ridge cap, 2 ridge terminals, 2 × 5.76 m of eave sealing tile
Sheet weight (5.4 kg per m²)about 130 kgabout 136 kg

Six sheets cover 5.76 m, so on a 5 m structure the roof runs about 38 cm past each side, which keeps slanting rain off the counter and the bench. If the site has no room for that, the installer trims the outer sheets. In version A the roof is 1 m higher at the house wall than at the eave, so check that the wall gives that height above the door and window heads. Post, beam and purlin sizes are your builder's calculation, set for the spans and the wind where you live.

Can you use PVC tile sheets for a garage cover or a carport?

Yes. A cobertura para garagem with tile sheets is built like the veranda: posts, beams, purlins less than 700 mm apart and a slope of 20% or more. On a 1-água carport against the house, put the high side on the wall and let the water fall on the open side, away from the gate and the path to the front door. Fit the eave sealing tile along the low edge.

A carport stands in full sun all day, so the colour has to last as long as the one on the house. The ASA top layer showed no colour change after 2,000 hours of artificial UV, the colour is rated for 30 years, and real roofs last 25 – 30 years. With no metal in the sheet there is nothing to rust, which helps on the coast, where salt air works on metal roofs. The warranty is 10 years for 2.5 mm and thicker sheet installed as Santiago recommends.

How does a buyer in Brazil get Santiago tile sheets?

Santiago makes the sheets in Vietnam and exports by container. The minimum export order is one 40 ft container, about 5,000 m of sheet, with colours, profiles and accessories mixed; production takes about 5 days. An área gourmet like the one above uses about 25 m, so homeowners and small builders buy through a Brazilian importer or distributor that brings containers in through Santos, Paranaguá or Itajaí.

Brazil (Mercosur) has no trade agreement preference with Vietnam for this product. Santiago ships it under HS code 3925.90.00; check the classification, duties and documents with your despachante aduaneiro before the first order. Every lot ships with a quality certificate (CQ), and the factory works under ISO 9001:2015 certificate ICI-23087.D. Samples are free (the buyer pays the courier), quotations are made per order in writing, and Santiago sends installation videos to your installer. It does not install. The full laying sequence is in our guide on how to install PVC roof tile sheets.

Frequently asked questions

What slope does a PVC tile roof over a veranda need?

Between 20% and 45%, which is 20 – 45 cm of rise for each metre of horizontal run. A flatter roof lets wind-driven rain back under the laps of the tile sheet.

Can I put a PVC tile roof over my churrasqueira?

Only over a built churrasqueira with a hood and a chimney that carries heat and smoke past the roof line. The Santiago tile sheet is a plastic sheet, not a fire-rated material, so ask the mason or the grill maker for the safe distance from the flue.

How many tile sheets does a 4 m × 5 m área gourmet need?

As a 1-água roof against the house with a 25% slope: 6 sheets of 4.161 m, about 24 m² of roof, 96 – 120 screw sets with ASA caps, 5.76 m of wall flashing and 5.76 m of eave sealing tile.

Can the frame be metalon or eucalipto tratado?

Yes, either works if the purlins are less than 700 mm apart (440 or 660 mm for the tile sheet) and every 70 mm screw goes through the top of the wave into a purlin.

Does Santiago install the roof in Brazil?

No. Santiago supplies the sheets and accessories from Vietnam and sends installation videos; a local builder installs. Homeowners usually buy through a Brazilian importer, since the minimum export order is one 40 ft container.

Metalon e madeira tratada servem.
