An ASA/PVC roof sheet has two jobs split between two materials. The rigid PVC core carries the load and cannot rust. The ASA top layer faces the sun: it blocks UV and holds the colour, which is why Santiago rates the colour for 30 years. Santiago recommends 2.5 – 3.0 mm sheets and gives the 10-year warranty only from 2.5 mm.

What does each layer do?

LayerMaterialJob
Top surfaceASABlocks UV, keeps the colour, weathers in sun and rain
CoreRigid PVCCarries the load, does not rust, conducts little heat

PVC on its own fades and turns brittle in strong sun. The ASA layer stops UV before it reaches the core, so the sheet keeps its strength and colour. Service life is over 30 years, typically 25 – 30 years in real use.

How can I check the ASA layer on a sample?

Look at a cut edge. The ASA layer shows as a thin band of colour on the top face, over the PVC core. At Santiago's trade fair booths, visitors were handed cut samples for exactly this check. Ask for a free sample before ordering; you pay only the courier.

Why is 2.5 mm the minimum?

A thicker sheet is stiffer between purlins and carries the 10-year warranty. Santiago does not recommend sheets thinner than 2.5 mm and gives no warranty on them. For most roofs, 2.5 or 3.0 mm is the choice.

Does the colour matter for heat?

Dark colours absorb more sun than light ones, so the surface of a dark roof runs hotter. Even so, the PVC core conducts far less heat than steel, and the space under an ASA/PVC roof stays about 6 – 8 °C cooler than under bare metal sheets in any colour.
