A chicken coop roof has to handle ammonia, summer heat and condensation. ASA PVC sheets do not rust in ammonia, keep the space about 6 – 8 °C cooler than bare metal and are quieter in rain. For backyard coops, add one translucent sheet for light; for commercial houses, about 5 – 10% of the roof. Use stainless screws.
Why do coop roofs fail?
Ammonia from droppings rises with warm air and condenses on the underside of the roof at night. It eats the zinc on steel roofing and screws. Drips of that condensation also wet the bedding.

Coop roof checklist
- ASA PVC sheets, 2.5 – 3.0 mm, so the roof cannot rust.
- Stainless screws with sealing washers and caps, through the top of the rib.
- Ventilation at the eaves and ridge to carry ammonia and moisture out.
- A translucent sheet for daylight, kept away from the roosts to avoid hot spots.
How many screws?
About 4 – 5 per square meter, which is roughly one screw every 2 – 2.7 square feet, with extra along the edges.
