Coffee drying and storage sheds on the Bolaven Plateau in southern Laos stay humid through the rainy season, which rusts metal roofs from the screw holes. ASA/PVC roofing sheets do not rust, and adding translucent skylight sheets, about 5 – 10% of the roof area, gives daylight for sorting beans without lamps.
What does a coffee shed roof need?
- No rust or rust drips onto drying beans.
- Daylight for sorting and quality checks.
- Less heat under the roof in the dry season, when beans are stored.
- Good drainage in heavy rain, so water does not blow in at the laps.

Daylight through translucent skylight sheets
Which sheets fit best?
| Part of the roof | Sheet |
|---|---|
| Main roof | ASA/PVC 6-wave sheet, 34 mm ribs for heavy rain |
| Daylight | 6-wave or 11-wave translucent skylight sheets, about 1 in every 10 – 20 sheets |
| Open drying area | Flat translucent sheet over a light frame |
Check that the skylight sheet profile laps correctly with the roof sheet before ordering; send Santiago the sheet sizes.
Fixing tips for humid sites
Use stainless screws with rubber washers and ASA caps, 4 – 5 sets per m², fixed through the top of the wave. Ordinary plated screws rust first in humid sheds and stain the sheets.
