In a Filipino house, most of the midday heat and the loudest rain noise come through the roof. Replacing bare GI sheets with ASA/PVC sheets lowers the temperature under the roof by about 6 – 8 °C and cuts rain noise by about 80%. A light colour, vents at the eaves and ridge, and ceiling insulation improve it further.
What each measure does
| Measure | Effect |
|---|---|
| ASA/PVC instead of bare GI | About 6 – 8 °C cooler under the roof, about 80% quieter rain |
| Light roof colour | Absorbs less sun |
| Eave and ridge vents | Let hot air out of the roof space |
| Ceiling insulation | Blocks the heat that still gets through |

Why is a GI roof so loud?
Thin steel vibrates like a drum under heavy rain. A 2.5 – 3.0 mm PVC sheet is thicker and absorbs more of the impact, so the sound inside is far lower.
Does a dark roof matter?
Dark colours absorb more sun. If you want chocolate or dark grey for the look, add good ventilation and ceiling insulation to compensate.
